US President Donald Trump said on Monday he was cutting short a 50-day deadline given to Russia over its war in Ukraine, underscoring his frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the protracted fighting between the two countries.

“I’m disappointed in President Putin,” Trump said, speaking alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer ahead of their meeting in Scotland. “I’m going to shorten that 50-day deadline that I gave him because I think I already know the answer to what’s going to happen.”

He did not name a new deadline.

Trump set the 50-day deadline earlier this month after the US president repeatedly expressed frustration with Putin, who continues to attack Ukraine despite US efforts to end the war.

Before returning to the White House in January, Trump, a self-styled peacemaker, promised to end the three-and-a-half-year conflict within 24 hours.

Trump has threatened new sanctions against Russia and buyers of its exports if an agreement is not reached by early September.

The US president issued his sharpest rebuke of Russia to date after months of half-hearted attempts to mend fences with Moscow that have produced little progress.

But the president, who has also expressed dissatisfaction with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, has not always backed up his tough talk about Putin with action, citing what he believes was a good relationship between the two in the past.

“We’ve thought many times that this issue is resolved, and then President Putin goes out and starts firing missiles at a city, like Kyiv, and kills a lot of people in a nursing home or somewhere,” Trump said. “And I say, you can’t do that.”

Ukraine on Monday praised US President Donald Trump for his announcement that he would shorten Putin’s 50-day deadline to end the war in Ukraine.

“Thank you President Trump for your strong stance and clear message of peace through strength,” Ukrainian presidential aide Andriy Yermak wrote on social media, adding: “When America leads through strength, others think twice.”
