Myths about Ukraine and refugees in Central European countries — news Ukraine

Фейки про Україну та біженців захоплюють країни Центральної Європи

© Center for Strategic Communications / Telegram Polish, Czech, and Slovak media have exposed dozens of fakes that create a negative image of Ukraine and Ukrainians in the region.

In the summer of 2025, the portals “Our Choice” (Poland), ProUA (Czech Republic), and “News from Slovakia” implemented a joint project aimed at exposing fakes about Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees. This was reported by the Center for Strategic Communications.

Over the course of three months, about 80 materials were published, which demonstrated the main directions of the spread of disinformation. Among them:

  • discrediting the Ukrainian government, army, and society through messages about the “corruption” and “incapacity” of the state;
  • the formation of an image of refugees as a “burden” or a “privileged group”, which allegedly creates conflicts with local residents;
  • presenting Ukrainians as a criminal or social threat;
  • manipulation of historical memory and symbols that undermine solidarity between peoples.

In each country, these narratives had specific emphases: in Poland, historical contradictions , in the Czech Republic, economic concerns, and in Slovakia, political instability and conspiracy theories.

The Center emphasizes that these fakes are spread not only by pro-Russian politicians and media, but also by local groups pursuing their own interests. Anti-Ukrainian propaganda in the Visegrad Group countries is part of a broader Russian information war against Ukraine and its allies.

Previously, the Center for Countering Disinformation published a forecast of Russia’s main information attacks in the first half of 2025. These propaganda campaigns relate, in particular, to the elections in Moldova and the Czech Republic, security guarantees for Ukraine from the West, and the departure of young people abroad.
