On July 30, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega sent a letter to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, in which he recognized the Russian-occupied territories of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia regions as part of the Russian Federation.
This is reported by the local newspaper El 19 digital.
“On behalf of the government and people of Nicaragua, we express our full support and full recognition of the Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia regions as an integral part of the territory of the Russian Federation,” Ortega wrote.
In addition, Ortega declared his support for the “heroic battle” that, according to him, Russia is waging against “Ukrainian neo-Nazism, which is supported by NATO.” He expressed confidence in the victory of the Russian Federation over “the forces of evil, against hegemonic states A hegemonic state is a state that has a leading role and influence over other states, often due to its economic, military, or political position. , against fascism”.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry responded to the statement of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega.
The department stated that if this information is confirmed, Ukraine will regard it as a gross violation of international law.
The Foreign Ministry also recalled that any recognition of the Russian occupation of Ukrainian regions contradicts UN General Assembly Resolution 3314 (XXIX) “Definition of Aggression”, which prohibits recognizing territories captured as a result of aggression.
“In resolution ES-11/4 of October 12, 2022, the UN General Assembly called on all states, international organizations and specialized UN agencies not to recognize any changes by the Russian Federation to the status of the Donetsk, Zaporizhia, Luhansk and Kherson regions of Ukraine, individually or collectively, and to refrain from any actions and steps that could be interpreted as recognition of any such changed status,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.
In addition, the Foreign Ministry recalled that in 2020, Ukraine had already introduced sectoral sanctions against Nicaragua due to its opening of an honorary consulate in occupied Simferopol.
“Ukraine calls on the Nicaraguan authorities to immediately officially refute the media reports if they are not true. The absence of such a refutation in the near future will be regarded by the Ukrainian side as confirmation of the authenticity of such reports, with all the corresponding consequences,” the message says.
