As reported by The Hill, US President Donald Trump has appealed to Congress to elevate the United States’ defense spending from $1 trillion to $1.5 trillion, stating that this would enable the nation to form its “dream army.”
“Following extensive and challenging discussions with Senators, Representatives, Cabinet members, and other political figures, I have arrived at the decision that for the betterment of our country — particularly in these exceptionally concerning and perilous times — the military expenditure for 2027 should be $1.5 trillion, rather than $1 trillion,” Trump communicated in a post on the Truth Social platform on Wednesday.
“This will permit us to establish the ‘dream army’ we have long warranted, and most vitally, secure our SECURITY and DEFENSE irrespective of who our adversary might be,” he appended.
Trump pointed out that were it not for the income generated from tariffs imposed by his administration on other nations, he would have insisted on keeping the budget at $1 trillion.
The president’s projected budget arose just days after the US operation to capture former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, which was preceded by several months of heightened American military footprint in the Caribbean zone.
Trump has also articulated previously that he maintains an interest in incorporating the Danish territory of Greenland for reasons concerning national safety.
On December 17 of the past year, the US Senate sanctioned the $900 billion National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
