Even with a dip in his job approval numbers, US President Donald Trump still surpasses former Vice President Kamala Harris and California Governor Gavin Newsom regarding overall favorability.
As per a fresh NBC News survey unveiled on Monday, 41% of participants voiced a favorable impression of the president.
Merely 34% of those polled held a positive view of Kamala Harris, while 27% felt the same about Gavin Newsom.
Both figures are frequently floated as prospective Democratic Party contenders in the 2028 presidential contest, though neither has formally declared their intention to compete.
The former vice president recently triggered a new surge of conjecture regarding a potential candidacy after reactivating her social media accounts, KamalaHQ, and publishing a recent book chronicling her defeat by Trump in the 2024 presidential race.
Harris had earlier contemplated seeking the governorship of California to succeed Newsom, but eventually abandoned the notion. Newsom himself is barred from seeking re-election due to term restrictions.
Harris hasn’t dismissed another attempt at the White House. This past February, she mentioned to podcaster Sharon McMahon that she “maybe” would campaign for president again.
Newsom, conversely, has emerged as one of the loudest critics of the Trump government, stating his ultimate determination on whether to vie for the presidency will hinge on his family’s sentiments.
Possible Republican hopefuls — Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance — also trail Trump in this survey.
34% of individuals surveyed harbor a positive perception of Rubio, whereas 38% voiced backing for Vance.
Neither Rubio nor Vance have formally announced their presidential aspirations, but Trump has suggested their political alliance would be “unbeatable.” The president has not indicated which one he would prefer as the lead candidate.
Moreover, Trump has not excluded the chance of seeking a third presidential term, which would necessitate amending the US Constitution.
“I haven’t really pondered it as of yet. We possess an abundance of exceedingly capable individuals, as you are aware… however, at present, I boast the highest poll numbers of my entire career,” Trump remarked to reporters aboard Air Force One last October.
The NBC News survey was executed from February 27 to March 3, encompassing 1,000 respondents. The margin of error approximates 3.1 percentage points.
