US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has reportedly requested that US Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George step down from his position and prematurely conclude his service, according to sources familiar with the matter, as reported by CBS News.

One of the sources mentioned that Hegseth aims to install in this role an individual who will execute the vision of President Donald Trump and the secretary himself concerning the evolution of the army.

A high-ranking official from the US Department of Defense communicated to CBS News: “We value his contributions, but now is the opportune moment for an alteration in military leadership.”

George previously held the position of Senior Military Assistant to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin from 2021 to 2022 during the Joe Biden administration, following decades of service. George was appointed as an infantry officer after his graduation from West Point in 1988 and participated in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom. Before assuming the role of Army Chief of Staff, he functioned as Deputy Chief of Staff from 2022 to 2023.

The U.S. Army Chief of Staff usually serves a term lasting four years. George was nominated by President Joe Biden and received confirmation from the Senate in 2023, indicating that his service would continue until 2027.

It is anticipated that George will be succeeded by the current Army Deputy Chief of Staff Gen. Christopher LaNeve, who previously served as Hegseth’s military aide. He held the position of commander of the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division from 2022 to 2023.

The U.S. Military Academy at West Point shared images of George on social media on Thursday, emphasizing that he “shared practical insights with cadets preparing for command” during his visit.
