As reported by the Associated Press, a 37-year-old female was fatally shot in Minneapolis by an agent of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during an extensive immigration enforcement operation enacted by the Trump administration. While federal authorities assert the shooting was an instance of self-protection, both the city’s mayor and the Minnesota governor have denounced the agents’ conduct as imprudent and preventable.

The event unfolded on Wednesday morning, past 9:30 a.m., in a residential area situated to the south of Minneapolis’s central business district—merely a few blocks away from one of the city’s most established immigrant communities and roughly a mile distant from where George Floyd perished at the hands of law enforcement in 2020.

A woman suffered a gunshot wound to the head while inside her vehicle, in the presence of a relative. The occurrence was documented on video by onlookers, and scores of incensed demonstrators rapidly congregated at the location. An evening memorial service was conducted, advocating for opposition to immigration raids.

Federal government version

US Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem characterized the event as a “case of domestic terrorism” directed at ICE agents. She stated that the woman purportedly attempted to strike and run down the officers utilizing her automobile.

“The officer responded promptly and in self-preservation—he discharged his weapon to safeguard both himself and those nearby,” Noem conveyed.

President Donald Trump seconded this narrative on social platforms, accusing the woman of intentionally assaulting the agents and advocating for ICE’s actions.

Subsequently, at an evening press briefing in Minnesota, Noem reiterated her stance, asserting that the deceased was supposedly part of a “group of agitators.” Simultaneously, she recognized the loss of life as a sorrowful event and declared that the FBI would be investigating the circumstances.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has conveyed strong disapproval of the federal government’s account, dismissing ICE’s justification of self-defense as “absurd” and condemning the agency’s existence within the city, asserting that it merely “engenders disarray and mistrust.”

“ICE, get out of Minneapolis,” Frey stated.

What is seen in the video

Videos distributed via social media from various vantage points display an agent approaching a Honda Pilot SUV, halted in the center of the roadway, requesting the driver to exit and attempting to open the door. The automobile commences to slowly progress forward, whereupon a separate ICE agent stationed in front of the vehicle instantaneously produces a firearm and discharges it a minimum of twice at proximate range, compelling the driver to recoil.

The video does not definitively confirm whether the officer sustained contact with the car. In the aftermath of the gunfire, the car collided with a pair of stationary vehicles and ultimately ceased moving on the roadside. Paramedics endeavored to revive the woman, but she succumbed to her injuries at the location.

State government reaction

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz communicated that he had placed the National Guard on standby in anticipation of potential escalation, while simultaneously imploring demonstrators to uphold the tranquil character of their actions.

“This was foreseen and preventable,” he remarked, further stating that the casualties were a consequence of policies geared towards inciting apprehension and conflict.

The demise of a woman in Minneapolis marks at least the fifth instance of mortality connected to the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement actions. Analogous occurrences have transpired in locales such as Chicago, Maryland, and other states, wherein video and firsthand observations have similarly challenged the validity of the official assertions of “self-defense.”
