During their recent gathering in Beijing on Friday, US President Donald Trump and Chinese premier Xi Jinping highlighted constancy, though they issued no declarations concerning resolving complicated matters regarding commerce, the conflict in Iran, or other issues, reports The New York Times.

While seated beside Xi during their discussion at Zhongnanhai, the guarded headquarters of China's governing Communist Party, Trump noted that the Chinese leader had “become a genuine friend” and that they shared similar perspectives on the conflict.

“We resolved numerous varied difficulties that others could not resolve,” Trump stated, omitting specific details.

Xi mentioned that he chose to host Trump at Zhongnanhai in response to his prior visit to Mar-a-Lago in Florida during 2017. However, he avoided providing precise responses, deviating from the explicit caution concerning Taiwan he delivered on Thursday.

The Trump-Xi conference, the initial visit by a U.S. president to China in almost ten years, serves as a gauge of whether the lessening of strain between the two nations will persist. It featured widespread expressions of admiration and cordiality. During a grand state dinner on Thursday evening, Trump extended an invitation to Xi to visit the White House in September.

The White House characterized Trump and Xi's assembly on Thursday as a “productive meeting” and aimed to emphasize Trump’s priorities, indicating that both parties concurred that the Strait of Hormuz should remain accessible and that “Iran must never possess a nuclear weapon.” Additionally, Trump informed a journalist on Friday that he and Xi had secured “outstanding trade agreements.”

Xi replied by expressing, “Today, we’ve achieved a fresh phase in bilateral relations and fostered a bond with constructive strategic stability. This visit can be termed a significant event.”

Concurrently, the publication conveys that amid formal deliberations behind closed doors on Thursday, Xi cautioned Trump that the Taiwan predicament could give rise to dispute and an “extremely perilous situation” if not aptly addressed.

Xi further alluded to the necessity of evading the “Thucydides trap” – a premise suggesting that a well-established nation is menaced by an ascending power, potentially instigating strife.

Trump and Xi previously convened in October in South Korea, where they decided to put the trade conflict on hold. China had earlier signaled intentions to impose new export limitations on rare earth minerals in retaliation to hefty U.S. levies on Chinese commodities. In South Korea, Xi consented to postpone those actions for a year. Whether China will consent to an extension remains unclear.

Hours prior to the assembly at Zhongnanhai on Friday, Trump referenced Xi on social media, seemingly suggesting America’s decline.

“When President Xi very elegantly called the United States perhaps a declining nation, he was referring to the enormous damage we have suffered during the four years of the Biden administration, and he was 100% right about that,” Trump posted on social media.

It remained uncertain whether he was alluding to something Xi expressed in public or privately.

Simultaneously, the Associated Press notes that Trump maintained an atypical silence with reporters during his sojourn to China.

“Perhaps it was out of deference for Xi, but Trump refrained from answering reporters’ queries as they toured the Temple of Heaven on Thursday. And he refrained from doing so again on Friday, strolling with Xi through Zhongnanhai. Trump’s relative quiet extended even to his social media posts, where he was not as active as usual during his three-day talks in Beijing,” the AP mentioned.

Trump’s visit to China has concluded. According to Reuters, his motorcade, accompanied by law enforcement, has departed for the airport.
