The Department of Homeland Security in the U.S. has pinpointed the conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran as a probable reason for the actions of the individual accused of trying to murder former U.S. President Donald Trump and high-ranking administration figures at a White House Correspondents' Association gathering the previous month, according to a dispatch sent to law enforcement agencies across the nation and various federal departments, Reuters reported.

The report, an initial evaluation by the Office of Intelligence and Analysis of the US Department of Homeland Security, dated April 27, points out that suspect Cole Allen harbored “numerous social and political complaints.” The Iranian dispute may have factored into Allen’s choice to perpetrate the assault, the report states, referencing the suspect’s posts on social media where he voiced disapproval of the U.S. presidential administration’s actions.

These conclusions, though initial, offer the most compelling indication so far that a confrontation with Iran might have been the impetus.

On Tuesday, May 5, the U.S. Department of Justice indicted Allen with attacking a federal agent, alongside accusations of attempted homicide, using a firearm while committing a violent crime, and unlawfully transporting firearms and ammunition across state borders. Allen allegedly shot a U.S. Secret Service official. The accused has declared his innocence.

American authorities have disclosed little about Allen’s potential rationale, alluding only to an email he dispatched to family members on the night of the offense, which conveyed animosity toward the Trump administration and a desire to target a “traitor” who would deliver the address — without directly naming Trump.

In legal documents, prosecutors claim that Allen “disagreed” with Trump on governmental matters and aimed to challenge government strategies and judgments he deemed “morally unacceptable.”

The FBI is thoroughly scrutinizing Allen’s social media presence and digital traces to ascertain a motive for the aggression.

The probe encompasses an investigation of posts from a Bluesky profile connected to Allen, who issued and circulated a number of anti-Trump articles in the weeks preceding the offense. These articles include condemnation of the U.S.’s involvement in the dispute with Iran, alongside sharp criticisms of the Trump regime regarding immigration policy, businessman Elon Musk, and Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The profile shared a post urging Trump’s removal from office regarding the U.S. president’s ultimatum to obliterate Iranian culture, which appeared hours before Trump consented to a truce in the conflict with Tehran. The profile also disseminated disapproval of journalists intending to partake in a dinner with Trump.

The FBI scrutinized a 2024 article where an account linked to Allen, citing passages from the Bible, purportedly labeled Trump “the devil” in reply to a post by Trump’s daughter Tiffany.

The emphasis on Allen’s online behavior is partially intended to avert the rise of unfounded theories regarding the suspect’s reasons, one of the officials expressed.

On April 26, an individual wielding a rifle, a handgun, and knives initiated gunfire on a U.S. Secret Service operative at a hotel adjacent to the ballroom where Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and various cabinet members were attending a White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Trump and other participants were ushered out when gunshots were detected.

This is not the premiere endeavor on Trump’s life. During a 2024 rally in Pennsylvania, an armed person started firing at Trump, wounding him in the ear. A few months later, another armed person awaited a chance to harm Trump as he was golfing on his private course in Florida. In 2024, there were also reports of Iran scheming to assassinate Trump during the campaign. And in 2018, a North Dakota man confessed that his plan was to employ a pilfered forklift to overturn Trump’s vehicle while the U.S. president was within.
