The USA will transfer two vital NATO command centers to European military personnel – located in Naples, Italy, and Norfolk, Virginia, Reuters reports , based on information from a source.

In this realignment, European officers will assume leadership of NATO Joint Forces in Naples and Norfolk, positions currently held by American admirals.

Conversely, the United States will gain authority over three command structures situated slightly lower in the chain of command but holding substantial responsibility for operations – Joint Air Command, Joint Maritime Command, and Joint Land Command.

“The Allies have come to an agreement on a revised distribution of responsibilities among high-ranking officers in NATO’s command framework, in which European Allies, including NATO’s most recent members, will have a more prominent part in the Alliance’s armed forces leadership,” said a NATO representative, commenting on the anticipated modifications.

The official indicated that this determination is connected to “the planning of future rotations” and that additional, more precise details will be shared when appropriate.

This action corresponds with the demands of US President Donald Trump, who has been pressing European nations to shoulder greater responsibility for their own security. The Trump government has been advocating for the alliance, which has historically been US-dominated, to evolve into a “European-led NATO.”

The Washington Post previously disclosed that the Pentagon had plans to scale back US involvement in several NATO advisory bodies. Since Trump’s return to office, the US has initiated a decrease in its military presence across Europe . In the past year, the Pentagon surprisingly declared the removal of a brigade of soldiers from Romania and the curtailment of security aid initiatives for the three Baltic countries that share borders with Russia.
