While Republicans often agree with US President Donald Trump on nearly everything, his recent endeavor to obtain Greenland has caused division among many within his own political affiliation, according to a fresh AP-NORC survey .
The survey reveals that approximately 70% of U.S. adults are against Trump’s actions concerning Greenland, an independent region of Denmark and a NATO partner. This is a larger percentage than those who disapprove of his overall foreign relations strategies, indicating that Trump’s stance on Greenland has revealed a point of weakness for his administration.
Even Republicans show dissatisfaction. Roughly half of them do not agree with his push to transform a polar island into American domain, an action Trump considers crucial for nationwide Arctic security, whereas approximately half of the Republicans polled do favor the concept.
The survey took place from February 5-8, following Trump’s choice to revoke duties intended to pressure European nations into backing U.S. authority over Greenland.
Trump’s backers typically stand by him reliably, making the Greenland matter an exception. These ratings are Trump’s lowest among Republicans in a list of highlighted matters within the survey, including the financial system and immigration – on which 80% approve of his strategies in these domains. Seventy percent of Republicans are in favor of Trump’s comprehensive method to foreign affairs.
Trump asserts that the United States requires Greenland to oppose threats coming from Russia and China within the Arctic, in spite of the fact that America already keeps a military foothold on the island.
Alternative recent surveys, containing one by Pew Research Center in January, have signified that Republicans are mainly split on if the U.S. should assume control of Greenland, whereas American interviewees as a whole are in opposition.
