The Russian captain of the container ship that crashed into a US oil tanker in the North Sea has appeared in court and been remanded in custody.

The captain of the Solong, Vladimir Motin, 59, from Primorsky Krai, St Petersburg, Russia, appeared at Hull Magistrates' Court on Saturday morning charged with manslaughter by negligence.

Motin stood in a glass-enclosed dock during the 35-minute hearing, which heard how his vessel collided with the US tanker Stena Immaculate off the east coast of Yorkshire on Monday.

The court heard how all 23 people on the tanker were rescued, as well as 13 crew members from the Solong, but Mark Angelo Pernia, a 38-year-old Filipino national, was not found.

No application for bail was made and Deputy Chief Justice Tan Ikram, who was present during the interrogation via video link, remanded Motin in custody.

No statements have been received.

Motin will next appear at the Old Bailey on April 14.
