Pennsylvania police evacuated Governor Josh Shapiro and his family from their official residence after someone set the building on fire.
The fire broke out overnight, on the first night of the Jewish holiday of Passover, which Mr. Shapiro and his family were celebrating at the governor's official residence in the state capital, Harrisburg.
In a statement, state police said that while the investigation continues, they are “prepared to say at this time that this was arson.”
In a statement, Mr Shapiro, who is considered a potential Democratic presidential candidate in 2028, said he and his family were awakened around 2 a.m. by Pennsylvania State Police pounding on their door after a fire broke out.
The Harrisburg Fire Department arrived at the residence and while they attempted to extinguish the fire, police safely evacuated Mr. Shapiro and his family from the residence.
According to authorities, no one was hurt and the fire has been extinguished.
The fire caused “significant damage” to part of the home, state police said. Mr. Shapiro and his family were in another part of the house.
Police said they were conducting a multi-agency investigation into the fire.
