The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has prompted citizens to inform on undocumented migrants, proposing it as a path to “affordable housing.” The agency expressed this view on the X social media platform.

“Seeking affordable housing? Assist in reporting undocumented migrants in your community,” the message stated.

The ministry’s response came after Deputy Minister Tricia McLaughlin referenced a Los Angeles Times article, “Los Angeles rental prices have fallen to their lowest level in four years.” The piece highlighted a price decline following the exit of approximately 3 million undocumented migrants.

Subsequently, Democratic Senator Adam Schiff condemned the agency for embracing the rationale reminiscent of Nazi Germany.

“The logic of circa 1930s Germany is now the guiding principle of the Department of Homeland Security,” his message on X asserted .

Moreover, today the department unveiled a “landmark opportunity” for undocumented migrants to gain complimentary travel, debt relief from fines for overstaying, along with a $2,600 incentive aimed at aiding their return to their homeland.

It is worth noting that in May 2025, the Department of Homeland Security introduced a fresh initiative: every undocumented migrant opting for independent departure from the United States would be eligible for a one-time financial package of $1,000. Earlier in March, the ministry released a dedicated mobile application through which individuals seeking voluntary repatriation could submit their applications. After verifying departure via this platform, the migrant would receive the pledged amount. In December, the payment value was raised to $3,000.
