Israeli warplanes struck Iran's capital overnight, hitting a plant that made uranium centrifuges and another facility that made missile components, military leaders said.

Israel intercepted ten missiles overnight, while Iran's retaliatory strikes weakened.

Meanwhile, Iran has warned that any US intervention in the conflict could lead to a “full-scale war in the region.”

Israel is launching massive strikes against Iran's nuclear program and military facilities, beginning with a surprise bombing on Friday.

A Washington-based Iranian rights group said at least 585 people, including 239 civilians, were killed and more than 1,300 were injured.

Shops are closed across Iran's capital Tehran, including in the famous Grand Bazaar, as people queue for petrol and clog roads leading out of the city to escape the onslaught.

Iran fired about 400 missiles and launched hundreds of drones in retaliatory strikes that killed at least 24 people and wounded hundreds in Israel.

Some of them hit residential buildings in central Israel, causing severe damage, and air raid sirens repeatedly forced Israelis to seek shelter.

Iran fired fewer missiles in each of its salvos, with only a handful launched on Wednesday. The decline was not explained, but came after Israel targeted many Iranian launchers.

All eyes are on Washington, where US President Donald Trump initially distanced himself from the Israeli attacks but hinted at greater American involvement, saying he wanted something “much more” than a ceasefire. The US has also sent more warplanes to the region.

Washington-based Human Rights Activists said it had identified 239 of those killed in Israeli strikes as civilians and 126 as security personnel.

The group, which also provided detailed casualty figures for the 2022 protests over the death of Mahsa Amini, cross-checks local reports with a network of sources it has established in the country.

Iran has not released regular death toll figures for the conflict and has played down casualties in the past. The latest update, released on Monday, put the death toll at 224 and injured 1,277.

A powerful blast was heard at around 5am local time (2.30am BST) in Tehran on Wednesday morning, following earlier blasts overnight. Iranian authorities have denied the attacks, which have become increasingly common as Israeli airstrikes have intensified.

At least one strike hit the eastern Tehran district of Hakimieh, where the paramilitary Revolutionary Guards maintain an academy.

Israel says it carried out the strikes to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons after two months of diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran have made little progress but are still ongoing.

Mr Trump said Israel's campaign began after a 60-day window he set for negotiations.

Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful, although it is the only non-nuclear weapons state that enriches uranium to 60%, a small technical step from the weapons-grade level of 90%. U.S. intelligence agencies have said they do not believe Iran is actively working on a bomb.

On the sixth day of the conflict, neither side showed any signs of retreat.

“We will show no mercy to the Zionists,” Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a post on his official X account.

“A storm is sweeping over Tehran,” wrote Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz. “This is how dictatorships collapse.”
