Britain's King Charles made his first public appearance on Friday, waving to passers-by and well-wishers after a brief stay in hospital for observation due to side effects related to cancer treatment.

The 76-year-old has been undergoing treatment since he was diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer in February last year following tests following a corrective procedure for an enlarged prostate.

Buckingham Palace said Charles returned to his home, Clarence House, near the palace, on Thursday evening after a stay in hospital and his engagements on Friday would be postponed as a precaution.

Charles was seen leaving Clarence House in a car on Friday morning, sitting in the back seat with the window half down. BBC video showed Charles waving to those lining the often busy street between Clarence House and Buckingham Palace.

The palace declined to provide any details about the side effects, but a royal source described Thursday's setback as “nothing more than a minor bump in the road.”

His state visit to Italy next month with his wife Queen Camilla will go ahead, and no further health news is expected.

Charles's initial cancer diagnosis came as a shock less than 18 months into his reign. However, royal aides have since been optimistic about his health, and although his schedule is closely monitored, he has returned to a busy schedule.
