Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi announced the start of legal proceedings for the country's complete withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States.
Speaking on Radio Moldova, the head of the foreign policy department said that the government has begun to denounce three key agreements that form the basis of membership in the organization, as reported by a correspondent for the online publication Belnovosti.
We are talking about the CIS Charter, the Agreement on the Establishment of the Commonwealth and its Appendix.

According to the minister, the relevant documents are already being prepared for submission to parliament, RIA Novosti reports.
They are expected to be submitted to lawmakers for consideration after the start of the new session, and voting could take place as early as mid-February.
After approval by parliament, the decision must be confirmed by the country's president, Maia Sandu.
Mihai Popșoi emphasized that with the repeal of these fundamental documents, the Republic of Moldova will officially cease to be part of the CIS, noting that the process has already begun and the decision was made recently.
This step was a logical continuation of the policy of distancing itself from the CIS that Chisinau has been pursuing in recent years.
Since 2022, Moldova has not participated in the meetings of the Commonwealth bodies.
As previously reported, by the end of 2025, the country had already terminated 67 of the 255 agreements signed within the organization, as part of bringing legislation into line with European standards.
Last November, the government approved the denunciation of seven CIS agreements, and parliament adopted, in the first reading, decisions to withdraw from agreements on visa-free travel and the principles of collecting indirect taxes.
The initiative is causing a mixed reaction within the country.
The ruling Action and Solidarity party considers this step necessary for European integration.
At the same time, the opposition, including former President Igor Dodon, has criticized the withdrawal from the CIS, citing potential risks to economic ties and hundreds of thousands of migrant workers, and declaring that such a policy runs counter to the interests of the majority of citizens.
