A new GOST standard for potato chips comes into effect in Belarus in April: how much fat, crumbs, and brown chips are allowed in a pack

A new interstate standard for potato chips will come into effect in Belarus on April 1, 2026.

The document, developed by Rosstandart, has already been adopted in the republic, as well as in Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan, reports a correspondent for the online publication Belnovosti, citing TASS .

GOST applies to products made from natural potatoes or their processed products using heat treatment or extrusion.

The standard specifies in detail the organoleptic and physicochemical parameters that chips must meet.

According to the document, the slices must be crispy, crumbly, and have a characteristic taste and smell with a noticeable aroma.

The presence of swellings in the form of spherical formations that occur when potato fibers explode due to the heating of the liquid contained inside is allowed.

The quantity of brown chips resulting from the caramelization of sugars is also regulated – they may not exceed 20 percent of the net weight.

The proportion of crumbs in the package should not exceed a quarter of the total weight.

The fat content is regulated separately.

For chips made from natural potatoes, this figure should not exceed 45 percent.

If the product is made from semi-finished potato products, the fat content is limited to 35 percent.

According to the developers, unifying requirements across the CIS countries will reduce technical barriers, simplify quality control, and increase mutual trade volumes.
