A flight operated by Turkish Airlines, en route from Istanbul to Barcelona, was forced to land unexpectedly when a passenger’s Wi-Fi network name was determined to include a purported “bomb threat.”

This information was shared by Yahya Yustun, the Senior Vice President of Communications for Turkish Airlines, on his X account (previously known as Twitter).
According to the airline, the event transpired on January 15 during flight TK1853, which took off from Istanbul at roughly 9:00 a.m. local time. As the Airbus A321 neared Barcelona-José Tarradelas Airport, it performed two circular patterns over the Spanish east coast while awaiting clearance to land.
Yustun stated that as the aircraft approached its destination, the presence of a passenger who had activated a mobile hotspot and named it with wording suggesting a “bomb threat” was detected. Consequently, the flight personnel promptly enacted all security protocols as dictated by aviation regulations.
Following the aircraft’s arrival, the proper authorities executed an exhaustive examination of the aircraft, abiding by international aviation safety standards. The investigation yielded no hazardous materials or explosive devices, leading to the cessation of the alert.
Yustun further conveyed that the airline has commenced efforts to ascertain the identity of the traveler responsible for the misleading threat and will pursue legal action against them. The aircraft is scheduled to return to Istanbul after a fresh group of travelers boards.
Representatives from the Spanish Civil Guard verified that a comprehensive sweep of the plane revealed no questionable elements, and law enforcement has started an inquiry to determine the individual who disseminated the incorrect information.
The situation resulted in no harm to passengers or crew members, although it mandated adherence to standard safety procedures and caused a brief delay in the journey.
