Within the antique settlement of Laodicea, a magnificent two-meter sculpture of Athena was unearthed by archaeologists.
The sculpture is remarkable for the exquisite details of its embellishments. Athena is adorned in a light, sleeveless peplos and a mantle encircling her neck. This presents a genuine enigma for academics, as such a garment feature is exceptionally uncommon in depictions of Athena.
An aegis is displayed on the goddess’s torso. This is a defensive breastplate that showcases, at its core, the intricately sculpted head of Medusa the Gorgon, bordered by serpents.
The statue’s roughly hewn rear suggests it was designed for a recessed area or an inter-columnar space, limiting the viewing angle to its frontal aspect. At present, investigators persist in their quest to locate the statue’s missing head and additional pieces.
As a reminder, a 16-year-old German youth, during a casual swim in Lake Königssee, unexpectedly located a half-kilogram bar of pure gold at a depth of two meters.
