Russia is delivering to Iran both military hardware and technologies for overseeing the Internet, which the government is employing to quell widespread demonstrations within the nation.

This information comes from a report by Foreign Policy.

According to correspondents, Moscow has no plans for direct military involvement in Iran, yet it consistently backs the governing power with instruments of suppression. Notably, Russia provides Tehran with rifles, armored transports, and helicopters, and also imparts its knowledge in brutally suppressing demonstrations.

Russian technologies for managing communications take on a special significance. Foreign Policy indicates that, with backing from Russian firms, Iran has established a complex mechanism for in-depth analysis of web traffic. This enables the blocking of messaging apps, the tracking of demonstration organizers, while also maintaining the functionality of government institutions and banks.

Due to this, during the ongoing demonstrations, Iran has been able to constrain the mobilization of people without crippling governmental operations.

What is known about the situation in Iran?

Extensive demonstrations in Iran have swelled into nationwide instability. According to both global and regional news sources, the protests have extended to 185 cities spanning all of the country’s provinces, and skirmishes between security personnel and protestors are becoming progressively intense.

Just within the preceding 48 hours, fatalities could number over 2,000, and the human rights group HRANA documents in excess of 2,600 individuals detained. In the city of Qazvin, law enforcement personnel reportedly discharged live rounds at defenseless protestors, according to witnesses.

Amid the disquiet, Iranian authorities are limiting access to the World Wide Web, complicating efforts to confirm and disseminate information.

Trump has vowed a “forceful” reaction to the killing of protestors in Iran, further heightening international focus on the circumstances.
