The demonstrations commenced during the weekend, as merchants in Tehran's central marketplace showed their opposition to escalating inflation by shuttering their businesses. Hundreds of retailers in the Iranian metropolis and other locales initiated strikes. Subsequently, the demonstration evolved into a movement spurred by pervasive and fundamental critiques of the government. Dispersing to universities and public areas, millions have gathered in the streets to voice their dissent.
Law enforcement reacted with tear gas and detentions in numerous locations. As corroborated by reliable information, law enforcement officials used force during confrontations with students and young people.
An essential factor in the growth and escalation of the demonstrations is the involvement of merchants. These individuals once formed the bedrock of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, offering stability to the government. Should they withdraw their support, the mullahs would forfeit their societal and monetary underpinnings. It remains uncertain whether the Iranian government can effectively manage this challenge.
Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of the last Shah, expressed support for the demonstrations and implored Iranian security personnel to refrain from actions against the populace.
