Rocket Firing Aimed at Turkey
On the afternoon of March 4, the Turkish Ministry of Defense declared that NATO defense capabilities in the Eastern Mediterranean had intercepted a ballistic projectile discharged from Iran. The projectile traversed through Iraqi and Syrian territory and was advancing towards Turkey.
Ankara stated it would conduct discussions with NATO and various allies following the occurrence. The alliance emphasized its condemnation of Iran’s “aggression” against a member nation, specifically Turkey.
Simultaneously, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth indicated that the United States is cognizant of the circumstance. However, in his view, the Iranian assault on Turkey will not trigger the invocation of Article 5 of the Washington Treaty pertaining to NATO’s mutual defense commitment.
