The occurrence concerning the debris of an Iranian ballistic missile landing on Turkish land will not warrant the implementation of Article 5 of the Washington Treaty concerning NATO’s joint security.
This declaration was made by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during a news conference on Wednesday, March 4.
US reaction to the incident
Addressing the elimination of the airborne object, the Pentagon chief emphasized that the US is carefully observing the unfolding events, yet perceives no dangers that necessitate the inclusion of the Alliance’s joint forces in a direct confrontation.
“We are cognizant of this specific event, although there exists no justification to suggest it would instigate anything resembling Article 5,” Pete Hegseth remarked during discussions with journalists.
The downing of Iranian ballistic missiles and Ankara’s position
As previously detailed, on Wednesday, March 4, NATO’s Eastern Mediterranean protective forces intercepted and neutralized a ballistic projectile initiated from Iranian territory. The perilous entity transited over Iraq and Syria, aimed towards Turkey. The remnants of the ordnance descended within the vicinity of the Turkish province of Hatay. Thankfully, no deaths or injuries occurred.
The Turkish Ministry of National Defense conveyed a robust response to the disturbance, avowing its readiness to employ all requisite measures without hesitation to safeguard its airspace and domain, irrespective of the threat’s origin. Ankara further indicated immediate conversations with NATO and its partners.
Concurrently, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan underscored that his nation possesses substantial military capabilities to shield itself in the instance of a dispute intensifying. The direst potential scenario, according to the minister, constitutes an escalation that would implicate not only Iran but the entire region.
