China has remained reserved concerning its involvement in the truce arrangement between the US and Iran, but Beijing has presented itself as an advocate for peace.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning communicated this, CNN indicates.
The department’s representative addressed reporters’ inquiries about China’s part in a general sense, notwithstanding declarations from the White House about “high-level” conversations between American and Chinese dignitaries.
According to Mao Ning, China has been “proactively striving to assist in concluding the dispute” from the outset.
“As a responsible major power, China will persist in playing a constructive role and contributing positively to restoring calm and stability in the Gulf region and the Middle East,” Mao emphasized.
Ceasefire in Iran — China's role
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt stated that significant discussions between the United States and China have transpired in recent days. According to her, US President Donald Trump holds “substantial respect” for his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping and possesses a “strong professional relationship” with that nation.
“Discussions have occurred between the senior echelon of our government and the Chinese government,” she conveyed when queried about China’s contribution in achieving the Iran agreement.
It is worth noting that Donald Trump mentioned that China functioned as a “peacemaker” and purportedly aided in persuading Iran to negotiate a cessation of hostilities.
The AP, citing its independent sources, communicated that Chinese delegates were in contact with Iranian functionaries to encourage Tehran to identify a route to attain a truce accord.
