In India, law enforcement is probing a startling case focusing on a 20-year-old individual who purportedly severed his own limb to secure enrollment in a medical college utilizing a special provision for people with disabilities.

Oddity Central provides coverage on this matter.

Suraj Bhaskar, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, aspired to become a physician, similar to countless other Indian candidates. However, following a pair of unsuccessful efforts to clear the NEET admission test, a necessity for entry into medical academies, he, as per the inquiry, resolved to undertake a drastic measure.

Authorities suspect that the individual purposely removed his leg and fabricated an assault to obtain admission under the disabilities quota (PwD). As per Indian regulations, this quota comprises 5% of the openings in government and publicly supported higher learning establishments, encompassing medical faculties.

The issue surfaced subsequent to Suraj's older sibling, Akash Bhaskar, lodging a complaint with the police concerning the attack on his relative in Khalilpur village. According to his account, unidentified figures supposedly assaulted the youth and abandoned him unconscious with his leg detached. The constabulary initiated a file, but through the course of the investigation, they detected numerous discrepancies in the complainant’s declarations.

“The suspect endeavored to misdirect the probe with a manufactured narrative, yet his assertions failed to endure scrutiny during extensive questioning and examination of the evidence,” a police representative communicated.

Detectives confiscated Suraj's private journal, featuring the inscription: “I shall be an MBBS graduate by 2026,” and additionally secured testimony from his romantic partner, who verified his preoccupation with the notion of joining medical school. Officers also uncovered that the person had already sought to acquire authorized disability documents several months prior, albeit unsuccessfully.

The medical assessment bolstered the force’s uncertainties. According to the report, the limb was detached with exceptional precision, atypical of a forceful assault. Specialists infer that the removal might have been performed with the aid of an instrument. Moreover, syringes were discovered nearby the site where Suraj was recovered, which, according to the investigation, might have held anesthetics for mitigating pain prior to the severing.

“The complainant continuously modified his statement and attempted to mislead the constabulary,” the police officer remarked, further noting that Suraj was transferred to a trauma center. The detached limb remains unrecovered.

Notwithstanding the inquiry's conviction that the man intentionally inflicted self-harm to gain access to medical school bypassing NEET, the juridical evaluation of his conduct remains challenging. According to law enforcement, it is presently indistinct what judicial ramifications might transpire if the effort to employ the quota proves abortive.

As a reminder, a 14-year-old girl underwent limb removal involving a mass of 77 kg.
