The European Union played a positive role in addressing global challenges, upholding peace and security in the Western Balkans, and supporting Ukraine, said the UK’s UN Ambassador Barbara Woodward at the Security Council briefing on EU-UN Cooperation on Thursday.
“We recognise the EU’s efforts to address global challenges,” said Woodward. For example, she mentioned that the UK is “proud” to have worked alongside the EU to establish Energy Transition Partnerships and welcomes the EU’s “considerable support” for the UN’s Education Cannot Wait fund.
She also said that the UK “strongly supports the EU’s role upholding peace and security in the Western Balkans” and its support for Ukraine.
In January, a group of 11 European states including the UK pledged to deliver more arms to Ukraine, saying they would send main battle tanks, heavy artillery, air defence, ammunition and infantry fighting vehicles.
“The role of the EU in tackling global challenges and assisting the UN’s work encapsulates, in these times of crisis, the need for responsible multilateralism,” Woodward added.
