Britain and Spain have made “significant progress” in talks over an agreement to secure Gibraltar’s post-Brexit relationship with the European Union, Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said on Wednesday.
Gibraltar is currently the only part of Britain which is still in the Schengen passport-free area, under a deal that was struck the day before the UK left the EU’s single market in January 2021. However, British and Spanish officials have since been engaged in talks on trade ties between Gibraltar and the EU.
“Significant progress has been made. including (in) discussions on the text of the treaty and its implementation,” said Cleverly.
Spain claims sovereignty over the enclave at the southernmost tip of its country.
