Displaying a mastery of understatement, Connor Allen described the results in Strasbourg as “quite extraordinary.” And added #Fitfor55 clearly remains a “contentious topic.”

That's a wrap on a quite extraordinary #Strasbourg plenary for the ??? industry:

– #ETS and #CBAM delayed
– ICE vehicles to be phased out by 2035#Fitfor55 clearly remains a contentious topic, with no political consensus yet emerging. pic.twitter.com/kA4e6Rifve

So first the European People’s Party rejected a compromise on CBAM.

Parliament’s biggest group rejects compromise on EU carbon border tax.

Then the Greens, Left and S&D voted against the whole thing because they didn’t agree on a 2034 phase out. ECR and ID also voted against for the opposite reason and killed the whole thing explained Euractiv’s Kira Taylor.

The Greens, Left and S&D then voted against the whole thing because they didn't agree on a 2034 phase out. ECR and ID also voted against for the opposite reason and killed it. Social climate fund and CBAM too tied into ETS to go on without it.

Bas Eickhout says it just shows you can’t build deals with ECR and ID.

So no majority for the deal on ETS. EPP lowers the deal with the help of ECR and ID. And in the end we and S&D don’t accept that weakening of the proposal. ECR and ID also still vote against, so no majority. This shows: you can’t build deals with ECR and ID, dear EPP.

While Jessica Parker says that, as things stand, these rules would apply to Northern Ireland under the protocol.

Interesting story – both UK & EU officials confirm that, as things stand, these rules would apply to Northern Ireland under the protocol

Question too as to whether the UK will be caught up as a whole by the changeshttps://t.co/KGyPuGTTFd

Angela Merkel gives her first major interview since leaving office, and more significantly, the Ukraine invasion, but says she will not apologise for her policies during her 16 years as Germany’s chancellor, rejecting criticism that they were somehow responsible for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

She said she has no regrets about how she handled Putin after Crimea and “I don’t blame myself for not having tried hard enough to prevent escalation”.

Profiler watched the Merkel interview so you don’t have to. Basically she tries to protect her legacy. At this moment she is under heavy fire having resigned as chancellor. Many accuse her of being too “kind” and too tolerant of Putin.

But Jessica in Berlin captured the mood. I often disagreed with Frau #Merkel but always respected her. Her refusal to acknowledge responsibility for enabling German dependence on Russian energy despite Chechnya, Georgia, Crimea, Donbas, is thus difficult to swallow. History will not be kind.
