Civic engagement in Cyprus has long been influenced by the tensions between the Turk-Cypriots and Greek-Cypriots and by the strained relations with the European Union, which has impacted citizen’s trust in decision-making.
If empowering citizens is no longer seen as a ‘zero-sum game’ for the Cypriot government, trust still plays a crucial role in ensuring civic participation leads to concrete results.
As part of the H2020 DEMOTEC, EURACTIV travelled to Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, to talk with experts, government officials and civil society representatives about the current state of play of civic participation and its future on the Cypriot island.
