The Czech opposition is of the opinion that Prague projects a questionable image by dispatching Foreign Minister Petr Macinka to Washington as an attendee for the inaugural gathering of Donald Trump’s “Peace Council.” Ex-Foreign Minister and pro-Ukraine advocate Jan Lipavsky considers that his nation appears like an impoverished kin who is unwilling to cover the cost of admission but enjoys cinematic entertainment, reports České Noviny .
Full membership in the “Peace Council” amounts to one billion USD. Western nations have displayed hesitancy toward the body, which extended invitations to Russia and Belarus. The first assembly is slated for Thursday, February 19, in the US capital, where they intend to deliberate on the cessation of hostilities in Gaza. Besides the Czech Republic, Italy, Cyprus, Slovakia, Greece, and the European Commission will participate as observers at the assembly.
Opposition Parliamentarian Marek Ženišek holds the view that Minister Macinka ought not to attend under any circumstances, so as to prevent additional embarrassment. In his estimation, this constitutes “an unnecessary voyage by the most ignominious foreign minister in the history of the Czech Republic.”
Concurrently, former Minister Lipavsky exhibits a more restrained stance regarding Macinka’s excursion. According to his perspective, he lacks comprehension of the Czech government’s stance, which “would aspire to be on the council, yet evades the subscription fee.”
“Consequently, we resemble indigent relatives who decline to settle the entrance charge but relish attending films. We should conduct foreign affairs with greater assurance,” he articulated.
Another Member of Parliament, Barbora Urbanová, posits that the “Peace Council” merits consideration as a personal endeavor of Trump. She underscored that the Czech Republic flourishes and maintains security by virtue of international law, hence her aspiration for the foreign minister to refrain from endorsing such undertakings, but rather to bolster Prague’s standing within the EU and NATO.
As a reminder, according to Trump, during the opening convention of his “Peace Council”, the participating countries will proclaim a pledge to contribute in excess of five billion dollars towards rehabilitation and humanitarian relief endeavors in Gaza. Furthermore, the Council affiliates have designated thousands of individuals to bolster the stabilization contingents in the enclave.
