An autonomous aircraft of uncertain origin went down within the perimeter of a military base situated in the Polish city of Przasnysz. The event transpired on January 28 at the site of the 2nd Center for Electronic Intelligence, which specializes in radio-electronic intelligence and combat and bears responsibility, specifically, for observing the radio environment in northeastern Poland, encompassing the Suwałki Gap region, reports Polish Radio ZET.
The on-duty personnel of the military establishment registered a drone in flight above the premises. The UAV subsequently impacted the ground roughly 70 meters away from the arms storage.
Following an initial examination, the service members relocated the drone to one of the base’s rooms. In the beginning, there was a supposition that the drone could have been performing surveillance operations and gathering data from the facility’s antenna array.
“There is a suspicion that it was a surveillance UAV that was acquiring the parameters of the antenna system. The duty shift observed its movement, but were unable to intervene. Post-impact, an error was committed – the drone was taken inside the building. According to protocol, it should have been covered with a net or canvas and left untouched, as it might have been operational,” the radio station’s source mentioned.
However, the Polish Military Police subsequently issued an added communication on the X social media platform, indicating that initial assessments suggested that the drone may have been a recreational drone lacking both a memory card and a SIM card and causing no harm.
Still, investigative measures concerning the occurrence are underway, and definitive judgments have not been determined.
This is not the first occurrence of fragments of Russian drones and even missiles being discovered within Polish territory.
On the night of September 10, a number of Russian attack drones traversed the Polish boundary from Ukrainian land. A minimum of three airports were compelled to be closed until the morning hours.
