Madrid will continue to “firmly support” Ukraine, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez (PSOE/S&D) reiterated in a telephone conversation with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday.

Sources in the Spanish executive told Euractiv’s partner EFE that the two leaders reviewed the situation and Zelenskyy thanked Madrid for its support, both bilaterally and within the framework of the European Union.

“I have thanked Spain for its strong support, in particular its recent significant military aid package,” Zelenskyy said in a message on X.

He noted that the phone conversation with Sanchez (PSOE/S&D) was “meaningful” and focused on “Ukraine’s need for more air defence”.

Both countries are currently negotiating a long-term political security agreement within the framework of the Declaration of Support for Ukraine issued by the G7 countries in Vilnius in July 2023 and supported by Madrid.

During the phone conversation, Sánchez condemned recent Russian attacks on civilians and told Zelenskyy that Spain would increase its military support in 2024 with new capabilities.

The two leaders also discussed the possibility of Ukraine convening a Peace Summit in the coming months based on the Ukrainian Peace Formula.
