Luis Rubiales will resign on Friday as president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) after he faced widespread backlash for his behaviour after the Spanish women’s national team won the World Cup.

The kiss – without consent – to player Jenni Hermoso at the medal ceremony after winning the World Cup in Sydney last Sunday sparked controversy, with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez calling for his resignation, EFE reported.

The Rubiales’ decision, which he will announce at the RFEF meeting on Friday, was influenced by Hermoso’s statement through her union FUTPRO, the complaint lodged with the Sports Council (CSD) by the Women’s Professional Football League (Liga F) asking for his disqualification for “shameful behaviour” and the file opened by FIFA.

The kiss that was not consented to is only the tip of the iceberg, as further criticism of his behaviour towards the players during the world championship and open investigations into fraud further stirred the controversy.

In case Rubiales had decided not to resign, the government would have had to “act” through the Minister of the Presidency, Félix Bolaños, assuring that “things cannot stay like this”.
