Serbia and Kosovo must continue the EU-backed dialogue process as it is the only real way to resolve the tensions in Kosovo and calm the situation, said President Nataša Pirc Musar after meeting with Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vučić in Belgrade on Thursday.

The Slovenian president noted that the position of the EU and Slovenia was clear – dialogue, dialogue and once again, dialogue.

“Dialogue is the only true way to resolve difficult situations. Of course, both sides need to do so, and Kosovo must do its part of the job,” Pirc Musar said, announcing that she would visit Kosovo in October to talk to President Vjosa Osmani.

“We don’t want conflicts in the Western Balkans region. I think the outlined path should be clear – getting closer to Europe, European values, the rule of law, human rights,” she said.

Pirc Musar said she had also discussed the situation in Kosovo during an official visit to North Macedonia earlier this week.

As a jurist, Pirc Musar sees no reason why the Association of Serb Municipalities could not be established in line with the agreement on the normalisation of relations in Kosovo. The problem in Pristina, however, is that the Constitutional Court ruled the proposed formation unconstitutional in 2015, with Prime Minister Albin Kurti presenting another proposal based on the Croatian model.

She and Vučić agreed that agreements should be honoured, dialogue strengthened, and the situation calmed, she said.

Vučić thanked her Pirc Musar for being willing to hear arguments from Serbia.

The European future of the countries of the region is of vital importance for Slovenia, so it will always sincerely strive to make Serbia a part of the European family, Pirc Musar said at a press conference with Vučić.

“This requires adoption of the European legal order, commitment to the rule of law, fight against corruption and ensuring media freedom,” the Slovenian president said while welcoming Serbia’s progress regarding the EU visa policy.
