Slovenia has extended police checks at its border with Croatia and Hungary by another 20 days, until 19 November, citing concerns over terrorism and organised crime.
Slovenia reinstated border checks on 21 October – the day Italy introduced checks at the Slovenian border, citing heightened security risks due to organised crime gangs and the escalation of tensions in the Middle East.
Slovenia’s government listed the same reasons, now saying the checks had been introduced for internal security purposes and due to terrorist threats.
Slovenian police officers are not carrying out systematic checks, focusing on potentially suspect vehicles and passengers instead.
Once the new extension ends, police checks are likely to be extended for another month, the Interior Ministry has said.
