The price of electricity will be capped at €199 per megawatt hour and at €99 per MWh for gas, Finance Minister Igor Matovič decided together with municipalities following discussions for next year’s budget.
The caps will be implemented from 1 January 2023 until the end of March. Prime Minister Eduard Heger added that the state will pay 80% of the costs above the ceiling. The government previously announced the same caps for businesses.
The head of the association of self-governing regions SK8 and the chairman of the Trnava self-governing region Jozef Viskupič said that the cap is the result of long negotiations and discussions. According to Viskupič, price caps will mean both savings and stabilisation of public resources for the self-governing regions.
“We will be able to set budgets in an atmosphere of greater stability and predictability,” he said. There is a possibility of extending aid until the end of June, he noted, but it will depend on the evolution of energy prices.
Heger said a similar aid for households is in the works.
