A cross-party gathering of senior politicians to discuss the UK’s failure to make a success of Brexit an indication of a growing consensus about the malaise that the Brexit process is in.
Cabinet minister Michael Gove and former Labour MP Gisela Stuart, two of the leaders, along with former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, of the Vote Leave campaign for the 2016 referendum, were among the attendees at the stately home Ditchley Park in Oxfordshire at the end of last week.
Meanwhile, Labour’s foreign affairs spokesperson David Lammy, former Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson and David Lidington, a senior minister and ally in Theresa May’s government, represented the Remain campaign, The Observer reported.
On the agenda for the two days of talks, entitled the title “How can we make Brexit work better with our neighbours in Europe?” were how to improve the Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the UK and EU and how to solve the problems that the UK economy has faced since Brexit.
Although there is now a clear majority of Britons who believe that leaving the EU was a mistake, none of the major UK parties supports rejoining the bloc or the single market.
