An infantry company from the Romanian armed forces is to be sent to Kosovo to join the 80 soldiers already there as part of the NATO-led KFOR operation.

The decision was made in response to a request from Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) and approval by the North Atlantic Council as a result of the rising tensions in northern Kosovo after the terrorist attack on 24 September.

The company to be deployed in Kosovo is part of the strategic reserve at the disposal of SACEUR, the Ministry of Defence announced on Tuesday. Romania contributes to the EU operation EUFOR ALTHEA and holds the position of Chief of Staff at the Brigadier General level.

Currently, Romania has approximately 330 military personnel stationed in the Western Balkans. Of these, approximately 250 are stationed in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with an additional 80 in Kosovo.

In a related development, the UK has recently announced its decision to augment with an additional 200 soldiers its existing 400-member contingent in Kosovo.
