Romania’s foreign ministry summoned the Russian charge d’affaires after the Romanian Naval Forces announced the discovery of Russian drone fragments in Tulcea county on Saturday, according to Reuters.
Romania’s protest regarding airspace violation resulted from identifying new drone fragments on Romanian soil.
The drone remnants have been found approximately 2.5 kilometres southeast of Plauru, the village where fragments of a Russian drone had been found on 5 September.
Iulian Fota, the Secretary of State for Strategic Affairs, conveyed Bucharest’s protest over the violation of Romania’s airspace due to the identification, near the border with Ukraine, of drone fragments, similar to those used by the Russian forces in their aggression against Ukraine.
The Romanian official firmly requested the Russian side to cease actions against the Ukrainian population and infrastructure, including those that would in any way threaten the safety and security of Romanian citizens in the region, Reuters reported.
“I strongly condemn this incident caused by the Russian attacks on the Ukrainian ports on the Danube”, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said, adding he had a telephone conversation with the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, on Saturday, during which he informed him about ”the new developments”.
The National Committee for Emergency Situations adopted measures to alert Romanian citizens in the border region with Ukraine.
The Defense Ministry will assess and define areas within Romania adjacent to the Reni and Ismail conflict zones, where specific measures will be implemented.
