The Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Rob Yetten, expressed that representatives from European Union member states will deliberate on feasible deadlines for Ukraine’s entry into the EU in the approaching months. Yetten mentioned this during a joint press briefing alongside President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“The Netherlands firmly believes that Ukraine’s destiny lies within Europe. Ukraine should ultimately become an EU member as a consequence of this journey,” the Prime Minister articulated.

He also noted that Ukraine is steadily progressing on its reform journey.

“And I am truly astonished by the amount of progress achieved in recent years, despite the conflict, in enacting all the essential reforms needed to secure EU membership. Moreover, in the upcoming months, we will also engage with our European counterparts to discuss achievable timelines for accession,” Rob Yetten declared.

It’s worth reminding that Ukraine aspires to gain EU membership by 2027. Nevertheless, it still needs to meet certain criteria concerning economic and legal adjustments. Simultaneously, Brussels acknowledges that the ongoing war is the principal impediment – the Union is not prepared to admit a nation currently at war.

Will Ukraine become an EU member by 2027? President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly expressed this objective. However, Brussels has already clarified: it’s not possible to specify a precise date for entry, as the enlargement process primarily hinges on the execution of reforms. In the article “ EU Accession in 2027: There are promises, no reforms, ” Tetyana Shevchuk, the head of international programs at the Anti-Corruption Center, analyzes the underlying reasons for the delays in implementing crucial EU requirements. This includes judicial reform, revisions to the CPC, reformation of the State Bureau of Investigation, and the involvement of international experts in selection processes.
