Portugal will have cheaper and more competitive energy in the medium term as 60% of consumed energy already comes from “highly competitive” renewable sources, Portuguese Economy Minister António Costa Silva said on Monday.
“They [renewables] are highly competitive, as this energy crisis in Europe is showing. And therefore, in the medium term, we will have cheaper, more competitive energy,” said Costa Silva at the inauguration of Nokia’s new 5G and 6G research and development centre in Alfragide.
The minister stressed that Nokia was very “welcome” to Portugal and its investments because the company “is in line” with national concerns of the energy transition.
According to the minister, Nokia employs 2,800 people in Portugal, of which 2,500 are highly qualified workers, and the new centre would create 100 jobs in the next two years.
Costa Silva also said that Portugal was the third country in the European Union that produces the most engineers, highlighting the security in Portugal that attracts investors.
