The European Parliament must adopt anti-corruption legislation, representatives of Solidarna Polska, the main Eurosceptic force in parliament that is also part of the government, wrote in a letter sent to European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
Solidarna Polska’s letter comes following revelations reported by the Dutch daily NRC about Polish liberal MEP and former Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski receiving $93,000 a year for sitting on the advisory board of the Sir Bani Yas Forum conference, a conference organised by the UAE.
Since 2017, he has allegedly received almost half a million dollars.
In line with the revelations, Solidarna Polska has named its proposal for anti-corruption legislation “Lex Sikorski”, and is wanting in particular to prohibit MEPs from combining their mandates with questionable functions.
Speaking of the letter at a conference at the European Parliament’s office building in Poland, Deputy Minister for Climate and Environment Jacek Ozdobasa called on Metsola “to start the legislative process of lex Sikorski”.
“There is hardly a day that goes by that we do not learn of irregularities in relations between European parliamentarians and other countries”, said Ozdoba.
“We have Qatargate, now we have Sikorskigate,” he added. “Radosław Sikorski takes decisions in the European Parliament and at the same time receives money from another country. I think that raises doubts in everyone’s mind,” he added.
“The gangrene of the pathology of corruption that is spreading in the European Parliament must be solved systemically,” he also said.
