BUDAPEST (Reuters) – Peter Magyar, the winner of Hungary’s elections, announced on Tuesday that his administration could be inaugurated by mid-May. He added that his cabinet would promptly act to unlock billions of euros in suspended European Union funds.

Magyar detailed crucial areas where his administration can act swiftly to prevent losing about €10 billion in EU funds. He specified these as:

  • anti-corruption actions, including joining the European Public Prosecutor’s Office;
  • re-establishing and reinforcing the independence of the judiciary and investigative bodies;
  • restoring media freedom and academic liberties.

“I also communicated clearly to her, as we have emphasized before, that we can only agree to conditions that benefit the Hungarian populace, are advantageous for Hungarian businesses, and generally favor our country,” Magyar stated following a discussion with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Hungarian President Tamás Sulók, who is backed by the Fidesz party, the party of the current Prime Minister Viktor Orban, informed Magyar that he would request him to form Hungary’s next government.

Nevertheless, Magyar has intensified pressure on the president to step down. Should that not occur, Magyar stated he will employ his party’s mandate to revise legislation and remove him from office, along with other Orban “puppets.”

The Guardian previously assessed what Magyar’s triumph signifies for Hungary and the globe. The journalists noted that the effects of this occurrence will likely be perceived well beyond Hungary’s boundaries – from Brussels to Moscow, and from Kyiv to Washington.
