The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, stated that Europe is encountering “one of the most critical financial downturns in recorded history.” According to him, the sole solution involves “immediately” rescinding limitations on Russian power resources.
“Europe is facing a grave peril. The only resolution is to revoke the restrictions levied on Russian energy sources. Without delay. We should consider our own nation and our citizenry, not Putin. Instead of fomenting conflict, cherish and safeguard your land, Donald!” Orban penned.
The Hungarian Prime Minister’s declaration came as a response to utterances made by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who depicted Orban’s maneuvers concerning Ukraine as “Putin’s aspiration.”
“The possibility of NATO’s disintegration, the mitigation of penalties against Russia, a widespread energy crisis in Europe, the termination of assistance to Ukraine, and Orban’s impediment of a loan for Kyiv – all of this resembles Putin’s desired strategy,” the Polish Prime Minister underscored.
As a reminder, Hungary is set to conduct parliamentary elections next Sunday, where Orban’s faction is trailing the opposition. Reuters reported that the EU anticipates Orban’s defeat, but harbors no illusions regarding his prospective successor – there are no expectations that Peter Magyar, should he prevail, will drastically alter Budapest’s stance.
Volodymyr Kim elaborated on the potential scenarios following the Hungarian elections and how the subject of the “Ukrainian threat” has become integrated into Orban’s political contest in the article “ Viktor Orban’s Ukrainian Card: How Budapest Plays Kyiv .”
