The US and Nordic countries pledge to cooperate on military, climate and technology issues, Nordic leaders and US President Joe Biden said at a meeting in Helsinki as they pledged continued support for Ukraine and underlined transatlantic security.
Following the meeting, Biden joined a press conference with Finnish President Sauli Niinistö.
“The United States pledges unwavering support for NATO in the future and regardless of political change,” said Biden.
According to him, the US has learnt the lesson that peace and security in Europe means a guarantee also for the security of the US.
Following the meeting between Biden and the Nordic prime ministers earlier that day, the Finnish president’s office released a joint statement on other key geopolitical issues.
The leaders acknowledged “the importance of protecting and preserving the Arctic and promoting its sustainable economic development, working in consultation with the indigenous peoples of the Arctic”, the joint statement reads.
The six countries aim “to intensify cooperation on clean technologies, resource and energy efficiency, energy security, critical mineral resources, and resilient supply chains”, the statement reads.
On technology, the US and the Nordic countries committed “to step up cooperation on technologies such as 5G and 6G, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and quantum technologies”.
Cooperation on technological research would enable the US and the Nordic countries “to stay at the forefront” and develop standards aligning with “common values and interests” and “protect democracy and uphold human rights and fundamental freedoms”.
