No space for violence against women and girls in Europe [Promoted content]

No space for violence against women and girls in Europe [Promoted content] | INFBusiness.com

An increasing number of women and girls are subjected to violence, with 1 in 3 women above the age of 15 having been victims of gender-based violence in the European Union, and 1 in 20 women having been raped. Every 11 minutes a woman or a girl is killed by a family member. Many women also suffer from cyberviolence, and several female politicians face violence as part of their work.

Violence against women and girls is a clear violation of human rights, and combatting it is a priority for European liberals. We welcome all efforts by national and European governments. Yet, the lack of data at EU level, the rise of movements against women’s rights and recent regressive laws put forward are all barriers to an effective response to the situation.

There is still more to be done. We call on the EU and Member States to ratify and implement the Istanbul Convention and to define rape on the basis of the absence of consent. We also call for protecting and supporting victims and ensuring there is no impunity for perpetrators of these crimes. You can find out more of our work here.
