More than half of Croats believe the Roma do not want to work, and almost a quarter think men and women are not the same and should not play the same social role, according to a poll published by Nova TV and Dnevnik.hr on Sunday.
At the same time, the poll, carried out by IPSOS on a sample of 1,000 people for the office of the ombudsman Tena Simonovic Einwalter, showed some diverging trends in the perception of equality, with a growing number of respondents in favour of migrants and homosexuals.
Around 55% of those surveyed said they believed the Roma live on welfare and do not want to work, compared to 48% in a corresponding poll from 2016.
In the same vein, 24%, up from 19% in 2016, said men and women are not equal by nature and therefore could not play the same social roles.
By contrast, the number of those who would not want to employ migrants fell to 22% from 33%.
Likewise, only 13% would feel uncomfortable if they knew their neighbour was homosexual, compared to 17% seven years ago.
