The Dutch population increased by nearly 227,000 in 2022, bringing the total to over 17.8 million, according to Statistics Netherlands (CBS).
The increase was nearly double 2021 when there were about 115,000 additional inhabitants. According to CBS, the main factor behind this increase is migration into the country.
The largest group of immigrants that settled in the Netherlands were from Ukraine (89,000), followed by immigrants from Syria (15,200), Turkey (11,400), and India (10,400). Additionally, a total of 174,000 individuals emigrated from the Netherlands.
The number of migrants coming into the Netherlands has been steadily increasing, as asylum seekers submitted over 10,000 applications during the third quarter of 2022, 3,000 more applications than the previous quarter.
The Dutch government struggled to control its migration crisis in 2022 despite implementing new measures, and forcing municipalities to create more space.
“More needs to be done to bring the #[asylum influx] down. We simply cannot handle 1,000 asylum seekers a week. By increasing international pressure, stricter border security and making the Netherlands less attractive. That has the highest priority,” tweeted VVD MP Ruben Brekelmans.
