German Chancellor Friedrich Merz advocated for a prompt cessation of the battle waged by Israel and the U.S. against Iran, cautioning that the dispute is already negatively impacting the economies of numerous nations, Germany included, as reported by DW.
Merz stated that his administration, together with other countries, is employing every available diplomatic avenue in an attempt to halt the conflict.
“We are hopeful to discover avenues for bringing this war to a conclusion without delay, as it is advantageous to nobody and detrimental to many, including our economic situation,” Merz conveyed during remarks delivered in Norway, in company with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
He further commented that anxieties regarding Washington's approach concerning their precise strategy for ending the war “still remain largely unresolved.”
“Allow me to reiterate with clarity: Germany is not an active participant in this war and we have no desire to become one,” Merz emphasized during a visit to the Andøya Spaceport in Norway.
Previously, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen informed that, stemming from the conflict in the Middle East, gas and petroleum prices within the EU have surged, inflicting upon the union an additional expense of three billion euros within the initial ten days.
US President Donald Trump, during discussions with the heads of the G7 nations, asserted that Iran “will yield imminently.”
